Meet Michele Romanow

In honour of International Women's Day, Grayes will be dedicating the month of March to celebrating women. We will be posting a series of interviews featuring inspiring Grayes women driving change.

Tell us about your personal style and how it has evolved over your career.

I would describe my personal style as edgy with support of great basics which is one of the reason I love Grayes. Simple, classic pieces like a nice pair of dress pants or a well shaped blazer are important things to have in your wardrobe but I love when you can put a twist on them which is what Grayes is all about. As I've advanced in my career, I have definitely given myself permission to take a little more risk and mix it up. I've also learned how important it is to invest in high quality staples. I don't have time to be out shopping every weekend because I've ripped a hole in my favourite blazer!

What's the best style advice you've ever received? What's the most important piece of style advice you would offer young businesswomen?

Comfort is key, but more than that, confidence is key and it's hard to have one without the other. You need to style yourself in a way that makes you assured in who you are and allows this confidence to shine through. If you're not comfortable in skirts, don't wear them, just find a pair of pants that make you feel like a boss.

What items of clothing or ‘looks’ make you feel the most powerful and like your most authentic self?

As an investor, I need to be able to experience the products I'm being pitched before making commitments and sometimes this can require getting hands on without much notice. On CBC's Dragon's Den, I'm often the one running across the room to give a product a try in order to make an informed choice. For this reason, I find myself drawn to comfortable and stylish pairs of pants like the Grayes flare pant. A lightweight pantsuit with a pop of colour that allows me to comfortably jump on an innovative, new exercise bike or hop around on a newly designed pogo stick that I'm being pitched would definitely be my go-to.

What do you love most about the Grayes brand?

As a strong supporter of entrepreneurship, I love that Grayes is a company that was founded by a Canadian woman and that continues to champion strong, successful woman as part of their brand story. High quality materials and versatility in my pieces are both very important to me. With all my commitments, work and otherwise, I need to be ready for anything. High quality pieces that I can pair with anything and keep going back to without worrying about too much wear and tear are important in my wardrobe.

What is your philosophy when it comes to your wardrobe, and particularly your work wardrobe?

No matter what you're wearing, you need to feel like yourself in order to put your best foot forward in your career. If you don't feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing, even if it's a beautiful piece, it's going to have an effect on your confidence and demeanour at work. What works for someone else won't always work for you and that's okay. The great thing about fashion is that you always have options and there is something that works for everyone.
